Upgrading to Opie 1.0 without a network

October 17th, 2003

A simple easy way to upgrade to Opie 1.0 offline. I couldn’t get online because of a bug with the wireless implementation in 0.9.3. Hopefully. I hope it is fixed in 1.0. I can’t test until tonight.

The bug, in case you are not wondering, so I can bore you with it, is that the network applet does not accept the WEP key in any shape or form. Without WEP set, the connection was first time and worked like a dream. With WEP, I got nothing.

Want to play chess on the Zaurus, but think that that Java version is so crap because it doesn’t even have a checkmate (the king is taken!). Well, help is at hand. First, get “GNUChess”:http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=456 and then get ” Chess QBoard”:http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1135 a front end to the GNUChess Engine. Install both, and hey presto.

Got to love the screenshot for “Blanker”:http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=1108 an application that turns your screen off. Very helpful.

I number of good software packages and languages are available on the Zaurus; e.g. “Vim”:http://rikkus.info/zaurus.html#vim, “mySQL”:http://www.caulfei.demon.co.uk/zaurus/, “Python”:http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/zaurus/index.php, (or “Python”:http://opie.net.wox.org/python/). To do a search, use the very handy “IpkgFind”:http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/, or visit the “Zaurus Software Index”:http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/

If the default Sharp Rom isn’t good enough for you, I recommend “OpenZaurus”:http://www.openzaurus.org/. If that isn’t on the edge enough for you, you could always stick “Debian”:http://people.debian.org/~mdz/zaurus/ on.

And what OS isn’t complete without a version of “Nethack”:http://trolls.troll.no/warwick/nethack/ipk/

Sharp versus Mastercare

July 30th, 2003

Wow! I send my Zaurus back to Sharp UK on Thursday. Basically, it stopped working. Full stop. No lights, no display, nothing. As it less than a year old, it was still under warranty and Sharp took it without question. Yesterday, it was returned to me in full working order (except the battery was run down so I could only use it for a bit).

Compare this to the situation I had with the old Palm I had before the Z. I took it in to Dixons where I had foolishly bought extended cover from Mastercare. Two of the buttons were broken, so it was still usable, but I’d paid to have the pleasure of it being fixed. They took it in.

A month later, no response from Dixons. A month of phoning and going into the shop later, and it was returned to me. On a whim, I opened the box in the shop, to find it hadn’t been fixed at all. Back into the shop to see the salesman. He phoned Mastercare, who didn’t answer him. I ran out of time and had to go back to work. He promised to phone the next day.

As he hadn’t phoned the next day, I phoned in to be told that he’d left. I would have to bring the Palm back into the shop and it would be sent off again. Considering that I would probably never see the thing ever again if I let it go again, I declined. It still has two broken buttons and now decides to turn itself off on occasion.

Never buy a coverplan from Mastercare. I would never shop in Dixon’s (or PC World or any other affiliated shop again). Basically, they deserve to go out of business.

No more Zaurus in the UK?

The Register carries a worrying story that Sharp are not going to continue the Linux based Zaurus PDA in Europe.

bq. One reader was told in email signed ‘Z UK Support’: “We can confirm that we will not be launching the SL-5600. However, there are other PDA products planned for launch in the UK, although we can’t offer any details at this time.”

I’ve just installed MooView on the Zaurus to view all my images. No free pictures of cows though.
