MMR jab is safe

June 13th, 2002

BBC News | HEALTH | ‘No evidence’ MMR jab is unsafe

“The most in-depth analysis to date has cleared the controversial MMR vaccine of any link to autism or bowel disease.”

The problem is not that scientific research hasn’t previously said that the MMR jab is safe, but that the UK public fails to believe anything they are now told on this subject. Tarred with the governmental spin brush, scientists do not sound credible to many people.

For example :-

“David Potter, head of autism policy and information at the NAS, said: “How can scientists explain to parents the coexistence of these symptoms in their children? ”

Should they have to? Shouldn’t it be the other way round. Prove that these two coexisting symptions are linked.

Baby Faced Assassin

The fact that babies recognise faces better than adults should come as no suprise.

“Babies can easily distinguish between different faces as early as six months and may even be better at it than adults.”

For one, George spends hours looking at my ugly mug as if he’s drinking in the details. Secondly, I am absolutely useless at recognising people and details. If a major crime happened in front at me, I think at best I’d be able to say that the culprit was male or female.

Cycling can seriously damage you

“Britons cycle less than other Europeans. The reason for many is that they are scared to go on the road. So what can be done?”

This BBC article about cycling doesn’t actually give any possible solutions.

I cycled to work a lot last year, but there was not a single route that didn’t cross a very dangerous road or junction. Not great.

” Just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily can cut the risk of heart disease by half, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says.”

Good job my “summer cycle sessions” start soon. Honest.

Hot balloon kills superbugs in mattresses

This article in New Scientist gave me visions of mattresses being lifted up into the air by hot air balloons. At a certain height, they would be dropped to the ground, thus killing any superbugs hiding within (and anyone underneath the bug). With a nod to Douglas Adams, I thought this would be profoundly unfair on the mattresses.

Alzheimers

March 28th, 2002

We are fairly certain my gran is getting Alzheimers.

A couple of things about this story
- My wife thought this film was brilliant and is currently reading the book.
- Jim Broadbent played the Incompetent Doctor in the Comic Relief sketch. In fact, all the Doctors were very well known except Jim Broadbent (Rowan Atkinson, Joanna Lumley, Richard E. Grant and Hugh Grant being the others) so it is especially pleasing to see Jim get an Oscar.
