Mozilla Firefox

New version of Pheonix, erm, Mozilla, no Firebird, ack, call it Mozilla Firefox.

Get Firefox

Read how “it was branded”:http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/archives/000377.php and “why it got a new name”:http://www.bengoodger.com/weblog/archives/week_2004_02_08.shtml#000549.

Tabbed browsing in Firebird Slow?

Thursday, December 11th, 2003

If you have thought that closing and moving tabs in “Firebird (the best thing since sliced bread)”:http://texturizer.net/firebird/ has gotten slower recently, and you have “Tabbrowser Extensions (the best extension since sliced bread)”:http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions.html.en installed, you may want to look at the size of a file called tabextensions.rdf in your profile directory.

Since installing 0.7 this had grown to a wopping 4Mb and presumably the extension accessed this file every time it did something related to a tab. It was full of tabbing history. I’ve told TBE to not save the history on closure ( Tabbrowser Extensions > General > Undo Close Tab > “Save the history of “Recent Closed Tabs” on exit browser” ) and reduced the item history. You have do disable the entension, delete (or rename) tabextensions.rdf, then reinstall the extension.

The file size is a now minute 4k, and closing tabs is so blazingly fast, I wonder how I hadn’t noticed the problem until this week.

All your IE belong to us

“How to have multiple Internet Explorers”:http://www.insert-title.com/web_design/?page=articles/dev/multi_IE#WXPIE501 and “the bare minimum files needed to run them”:http://www.skyzyx.com/archives/000094.php [ via A Whole Lotta Nothing]

The thing is how easy it is to do, what did Microsoft gain by not saying how this was possible?

Now I can see how crap this site looks in IE5.0 and can fix it, or not bother.

Private JWZ Frasier

JWZ on the early days of Netscape [via "Boing Boing":http://boingboing.net/2003_07_01_archive.html#200443683 ]

bq. We’ve finally announced a public beta to the net, and there are loads of bugs, and they’re hard bugs, sucky, hardware-dependent ones. Some of our private beta testers crash at startup on some SunOS 4.1.3 systems, and I’ve got what seems like an identical system here and it doesn’t crash. And scrolling text doesn’t work with the OpenWindows X server, though it works fine elsewhere. And the cache is still fucked. We’re doomed.

I’d say “Lucky OpenWindows X”. Ah, the early days when Marquee not working was a bug.

Netscape is Dead, Long live Mozilla

Wednesday, July 16th, 2003

Everyman and his dog report that Netscape is no more. AOL gives theMozilla Foundation a wedge of cash to help them along.

Already seeing the results, doesn’t the “Mozilla main page”:http://www.mozilla.org look better.

Netscape, the browser, was on a life support machine for a long time anyway, Microsoft just let AOL pull out the plug.

So, now there is Opera and Mozilla/Firebird. Go forth, free of the rotten corpse of Netscape, let loose the New Browser Wars. (Do it now, I don’t think Microsoft are looking. They think they’ve won). Ahem. Insane lunchtime rant over.

Even better, The Bane of My Life(tm), “bug 184202″:http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=184202 is fixed. (Firebird had a tendancy to crash if it so much as glanced at a form that needed auto filling). Happy happy joy joy!

Give IE away for free?

Friday, May 30th, 2003

I like the way Microsoft work. There is a certain style to their evilness, don’t you think?

bq. As part of the agreement, Microsoft will give a new royalty-free, seven-year licence of its browsing technology to AOL.

I once sold a batch of “Tissue Compression Eliminators”:http://www.kasterborus.com/tardis/baddies/master/ to the Cybermen. I didn’t tell them about the gold handles on that particular version of the TCE that caused their systems to seize up and crash. It was funny watching them lurch around, clutching their respiratory boxes. The tried to attack me but couldn’t get their positions right. Ended up shooting themselves.
