I’ve been reading “NHS Blog doctor”:http://nhsblogdoc.blogspot.com/ and other NHS related weblogs and it is scary reading. It seems many people have little to look forward to in old age; other than illness and being badly looked after.
My daughter has been ill recently too, a constant stream of niggly minor coughs and colds. Ear ache was the latest ailment. It has been fairly constant that she has had problems since she started school. I think she got hit by one bug after another after being tired from starting full time. Plus, she never really got a break at Christmas, because Christmas is well, exciting and fun. Then they started back at school a day or two after New Year. Oh, and there is the baby keeping everyone up at night.
It got me thinking, in old age you expect to be rather more ill than when you are in your prime, what with everything falling apart, falling off and all that falling over. Children have childhood illnesses to overcome, which leaves a band of age where you are in your prime. From about 7 to 50.
Only it’s not so simple as that. From about 16 (or 18 if you want to do it legally) there is the start of a general abuse of your body. Beer, smoking, drugs, loud music etc and so on. I spent a fair amount of student life ill, or do you call it hungover? Then you have children and that makes you rather ill as well. Late nights, early mornings, sleepless nights, braindead mornings after sleepless nights.
Hopefully, it gets better. Maybe when your children have left home. Make the most of your health while you have it. And it’s probably best to get private health care.
Oh, and make no babies, get drunk or play dangerous sports. But where is the fun in that?
