Dalek

Thursday, May 5th, 2005

“Dalek”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/episodes/dalek.shtml finally succeeded where other episodes failed. George was scared of the Dalek.

He sat on my lap the whole time, clutching my Talking Dalek (pressing the button was not allowed after I missed a vital bit of plot explaining how the Dalek regenerated) and occasionally asking for the “spaceship one” (”End of the World”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/episodes/dalek.shtml which is his favourite). He didn’t get down from my lap, and he didn’t stop watching. If our sofa wasn’t pushed back against the wall, he could have watched from behind it.

He offered little comment the whole episode, except towards the end. I took the Talking Dalek’s eye stalk and pointed it towards George during the bit where the Dalek is threatening Van Statten (and the eye stalk moves from Van Statten to Rose repeatedly). George said “Don’t kill me”. I quickly moved the eye stalk so it was watching the TV. :)

Next morning he wanted to play Dalek’s with his grandad and they chased each other arms outstretched around the garden.

Emilia is showing little interest in the series. I suspect it doesn’t have enough pink in it.

For me, Dalek was the best episode of the series so far, and deserves to be remembered as a classic on a par with the best of the original series. (8/10 - Can it get better than that? I hope so.)
