Concorde

Friday, October 24th, 2003

Today, Concorde make its last flight to New York and I saw it as it flew over Reading, banking away back towards London, not its usual route but presumably taking the scenic route.

I wish I had a camera with me, it was the perfect moment. A bright clear sky, Concorde was turning so it’s wings were on full display. I think what makes it the best plane for me is that it looks like a paper aeroplane. Not a fancy, origami plane, but your standard arrow plane that any child can make.

I had the chance to stand on Concorde, but turned it done. I must have been around six or seven and we met my uncle, who was a steward on Concorde at the time, at Heathrow. We all stood on some platform looking down on the plane and he asked if I’d like to have a look inside. I refused. No amount of coaxing would change my mind. Of course I regret it now, I’d have to have become very rich, or eaten a “lot of biscuits”:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3204699.stm to have gotten on board later on. I think I was afraid it would take off with me on board. Why I was scared of this, I don’t know. Maybe because I thought New York was so far away.

My uncle got me a model concorde and a certificate to say I’d flown across to New York. I have neither now; the model broke after I decided to see if it flew as well as a paper aeroplane, and threw the certificate because it was a lie. I hadn’t flown on Concorde.

Upgrading to Opie 1.0 without a network

Friday, October 17th, 2003

A simple easy way to upgrade to Opie 1.0 offline. I couldn’t get online because of a bug with the wireless implementation in 0.9.3. Hopefully. I hope it is fixed in 1.0. I can’t test until tonight.

The bug, in case you are not wondering, so I can bore you with it, is that the network applet does not accept the WEP key in any shape or form. Without WEP set, the connection was first time and worked like a dream. With WEP, I got nothing.

Yang Liwei

Wednesday, October 15th, 2003

A historic day as China puts its first man in space. It is easy to underestimate the significance of this; USSR and USA having done it years ago. But the space race has stalled, and there was something about a hare and a tortoise.

bq. Once aloft, he [Yang Liwei] was said to be “reading a flight manual in the capsule of the Shenzhou V spacecraft and looked composed and at ease”.

Perhaps the Chinese government has no expectations of this working, and he hadn’t trained on how to get down.

23 CD’s sitting on the shelf

Thursday, October 9th, 2003

In a move that is going to make “Karen”:http://www.uborka.nu/ so very happy Joyce’s Ulysses is going to be an unabridged audio book on 23 CD’s no less. Imagine that.

bq. “Whenever I mentioned doing this people would guiltily admit the book had been sitting on their shelves for years unread,” said Professor Marsh.

So now we can also have 23 unread CD’s sitting on our shelves for years and years too.

Updated Fantasy Football

Friday, October 3rd, 2003

Basically, I let Van Nistelrooy go, so he could start scoring again, sacrificing my fantasy team for the real teams sake. Had to do it last year too. Now I’m bottom of my little league after losing 32 points as a result.

Oh, and Ferguson should give Ronaldo an extended run in the reserves for that shocking dive on Wednesday. Give Fletcher a run for the first team.
