The VeryLazyWeb

Friday, December 20th, 2002

I was going to say this URL creation tool is a great example of the VeryLazyWeb.

The VeryLazyWeb is the LazyWeb but where I can’t even be bothered to ask for a feature or piece of software, but I wait for it to be asked and built for me.

However, it seems the VeryLazyWeb has failed and I might have to go to the effort of using the LazyWeb :)
The application in question, written by Andre Torrez, keeps track of URLs you have visited, and makes them available to enter into a text editor. Groovy, but with two problems. It only works on Windows ( (and worse, only with Internet Explorer). And it only enters the actual URL (e.g. http://www.stevenberlinjohnson.com/movabletype/archives/000025.html).

I want it to add the a href=” bit too so I don’t have to type it out every time. I found a bookmarklet a while ago (the URL of which I sadly lost) that did the generate the a href stuff from the page you were one, but it was a pain to use because you still had to copy from the browser window (which opened behind the current window) and then paste into your text editor or browser.

Hixie has a comprehensive list cuts from the Buffy musical episode that they showed last night.

mod_gzip

Thursday, December 19th, 2002

This blog is now served compressed thanks to Stuart, my sysadmin and general all round knowledgable chap on Debian stuff.

Apparently, it was as simple as typing “apt-get install libapache-mod-gzip”.

I told my .htaccess file that I wanted to serve things up as compressed and now it works. Thanks to Mark Pilgrim for pointing out that this was a Good Idea.

Virtually Free Speech

This article on the blogger and employer relationships is interesting.

There are a number of things I was thinking about blogging about that were work related, but decided not to after getting a corporate email on another, but related subject. Basically, it stated what the article puts as

Many large companies have a policy that says only authorized workers, such as those in the public relations department, are allowed to reveal certain types of information, Farr said.

Maybe next year I’ll be able to talk about the products I use day to day, but for now, it is not worth risking it.
