RandomBlog

Random blogs “RandomFreshBlog is my version of the weblogs.com version of NextBlog! that Dave wants - I’m using the blo.gs changes.xml file rather than the weblogs.com version, since blo.gs’s file is a superset of weblogs.com’s.”

Clicking the link takes you to a randomly selected blog. Importantly, it has recently been updated. More useful than my RandomGoogleLink generator, methinks.

Weblog FAQ

FAQ: Weblog resources : “I don’t know why so few weblogs include pullquotes from their articles.

Maybe it’s a skill you have to learn, but the liveliest quote is usually pretty obvious to me.

It helps to have a clipboard-extender that allows you to copy the URL and a quote or three without making multiple trips.”

MT does this. Highlight the text you want to quote, click on your Posting Bookmarklet and the highlighted text appears in the entry body. Neat.

Topic Maps

Friday, July 26th, 2002

Simon Willison has been looking at Topic Maps and provided a group of links to some interesting references to Topic Maps.

I especially like the MyFirstTopicMap which builds a topic map around Star Wars.

I’ve looked at topic maps in the past but haven’t had the time to do anything with them. I may just give the StarWarsTopic a go. They remind me of the multiple dimensionality of an OLAP database.

XooMLe

DentedReality: XooMLe: Google in XML!: “Query Google and get your results in XML”

In reality, another gateway onto of the Google SOAP API. This is why web services are such a good idea. It allows people to build on top of services, either providing a custom web interface or a custom web service.

XooMLe, at present, seems to be just a web interface, but if you read the documentation coming soon, I’m expecting it to be a web service.

This is the planned next step for the Random Link Generator. I plan to make it a web service. Send a request, receive back an XML document (or whatever) containing your random URL.

Even that is just playing, preparation for the Comments Web Service idea I had.
