Simple guidelines on using ALT texts in IMG elements

Monday, March 25th, 2002

It may be common knowledge that you should use Alt text in IMG elements, but are you doing it in a way that makes sense, or are you putting something in there just to validate your page?

An interesting recommendation from the page :-

2. For a purely decorative image, use ALT=”"

As it is just decoration, when the page displays no images, there should be no text displayed either.

Perhaps the most useful part is where it discusses whether to use ALT or TITLE with images that are links.

(note: I’m working through various older bookmark entries to get them out of my bookmarks and into a blog; hence sometimes the not entirely resent articles linked here)

It is by no means an exhaustive overview but merely points out some of the most noteworthy features.”

Peru’s Drab city attacked

Peru car bombs kill nine

The second Peruvian posting in two days. It’s unclear whether this attack is aimed at the US or part of typical South American terrorism. I think the former, terrorism in Peru hasn’t been active for some time. If it was Columbia …

I should point out that Lima is the complete opposite to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. It is a drab, gray city and looks like a dirty European city. The best place we found to eat there was a Pizza Hut, which says it all really.
