A list of things that are happening in the life of me

    Installing Debian on PC

Problematic. My new PC came with XP pre-installed, and I've used Partition Magic 7 to create a partition for Linux (and the swap). This went fine, but took ages, because PM is stupid. First it moved the 40GB XP partition out of the way for the Linux partition, then it moved it again for the swap partition. Moving the partition took half an hour each time.

The install of Debian and the dual boot to XP using LILO works like a dream. The problems are in setting up XWindows and modem. Exactly the same problems I had on my old computer when I tested this out.

    Curses.

    Use Python/Castalian

Dellah.com will come out in a new spiffy version 2.0 after I've written the code to do it all in Python and the pretty great Castalian. I'm also learning Python/XML by writing xPlod, an XML version of Plod which uses Python to do selects/deletes/inserts in a SQL way on an CSV file. xPlod will do the same, but against an XML file. Useful? Not really. But I have to have a project to be able to learn stuff. I have trouble learning a language by just reading the manuals and expecting it to get into my brain by osmosis. Of course, I won't be able to use Castalian on Ghoulnet, so it'll have to wait until I've moved to Aq's Big Server Idea. Which I develop on in anger, until I've sorted out my Debian problems.

    Get digital camera

The only thing I really truly need at the moment is a digital camera. Comments and advise welcome. I may have in the region of 500UKP to spend (if I can convince The Wife.

    Write some stuff

Oh List of Shame, I do beseech thee,
Give up thy foul and cankerous grip,
Let me write, either fair or foul,
And cast me out from thine domain.

    Go to the Doctor's

I've had chest pains for the last week. Painful enough for me to actually decide that enough is enough and a visit to the Doctor is in order. I've been twice in the last three years prior to this.

I do apologise about Castalian not working on Ghoulnet. However, it's Ghoulnet's fault; they're running an old version of cgiwrap that wraps all executed CGIs (to try and avoid badly coded CGIs being horrific security holes), and that version of cgiwrap breaks the Apache PATH_TRANSLATED variable. Castalian needs that, because that's how the CGI knows which .cas page you actually requested. I moaned at Ghoulnet about this and they said: tough noogies. Oh, and we're removing telnet access to our servers, too, incidentally.

There used to be a hack in Castalian to get around this, but it broke the QueryString if you were on a server that really *did* support PATH_TRANSLATED, so I took it out.

When you write some stuff, can you write the next bit of Children of the Eye, too? I've got the plot in my head, it's just finding the time...

And good luck with Debian. Drop me a mail and I might be able to help? Possibly being able to ssh and/or VNC into the box might help, too...?

And xPlod will be the coolest thing ever. Let me have it when you've finished. Especially if it supports the XPath or XQuery stuff for doing queries on XML files, because that's super-duper. I like the idea of it, but I couldn't see how to do it, 'cos the Python XML libraries are a total closed book to me...

On the xPlod front, progress looks to be slow and painful. I've abandoned my first approach which essentially aped Plod, but haven't had time to start a new approach.

/me quietly notes that if Sarabian *does* write Children of the Eye, Aquarius will remain on the List, as the List is of people, not fics. So nyah :Þ

/me is not about to write Children of the Eye any time soon. I've enough entries on the list as it is.
