1. Waiting ...

   We're sitting in the hospital corridor waiting to see the consultant. There are no pensioners lying on beds near us, but the sense of NHS decay was present.

   We'd been waiting fifty minutes to see the consultant. Earlier, probably to keep us occupied, a midwife had taken us into a room and taken my wife's blood pressure.

   We'd waited twenty minutes before the midwife had seen us. I voiced the opinion that we both had better things to be doing.

   Ten minutes later the consultant appears, a bespectacled lady, coffee mug in hand, discussing the Queen Mother and the forthcoming funeral with a nurse. She takes a sip of her coffee, time slows almost noticeably. She enters the room opposite us. I could clearly see the room was empty.

   Five minutes and a lifetime later, the door opens again. A folder is taken from a desk outside the room. "Mrs Freeman?" she calls out. It is a southern accent. Politely posh.

   Inside the room. We are sitting down again, but waiting. The consultant is reading from the folder. I notice the coffee mug is empty.

   Five minutes later we are walking back to the car, consultancy over. There was nothing to report, it seems. Everything was going okay. There was nothing for the consultant to do at this stage. She will see us at 41 weeks if nothing has happened.

   We got back just in time to see the Queen Mother being laid to rest.
