The acts commenced on this ball of earth: Upon my tongues continual slanders ride,
A day of killing, mauling, running, shooting and mayhem. Yes, a networked computer gaming session. For the record, I haven't played a computer game for around two years now, due to having a family and responsibilities and all that. However, the chance to take my new computer round to a friends and have a whole day of playing was just too good to miss.
The morning didn't start too well. Gina wasn't feeling very well (a chest infection) and we all went to the surgery to see if she could take anything. It was open surgery which means you just turn up and wait your turn. Whilst waiting, Emilia amused us by running around and investigating everything.
The doctor was reluctant to give Gina the antibiotics needed to combat the infection. Understandable really, but didn't help her. He recommended hot water with a slice of lemon and a dollop of honey. Hmmm, nice. I was hesitant to head off to play games when she was wasn't well, but she insisted I go, knowing how much I was looking forward to it.
I was first to arrive. JC, our host and ex-neighbour, explained that he was unsure how many people were coming, but it was at least four and possibly up to eight. We spent an hour setting up tables, cables and stuff before the others arrived. In the end it was just the four definites that played.
I won't bore you with the details of the games, but we played Medal of Honour, Counter-strike and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I would say all the games were initially enjoyable, but I soon tired of them. It didn't help that they were all similar types of games. I should point out that I wasn't very good either. I died around twice as often as I killed. Still, no one was taking it very seriously, and amount of drinking involved precluded any skillful playing.
A final monster session of Total Annihilation finished the evening. I enjoyed this more. It was humans versus AIs and the others soaked up most of the pressure allowing me to continue at a much more leisurely pace. I like games I can take a break from, swig a bear, have a chat and laugh about.
In summary, I great social day. It has cleared my yearning for playing computer games for a while allowing me to concentrate on my responsibilties.

I suppose there are only so many frags you can have in one day. :-)
First-person shooters do get a touch boring after a while, don't they? I like the idea of something with some strategy and thinking behind it, like Deus Ex or Max Payne. Sadly, I'd need a good Windows box for that, and I have neither the money to buy it nor the inclination to spend good money on a Windows box ;-)
Posted by Aquarius at January 21, 2002 08:15 PMMy favourite recent games have been System Shock 2 and Thief, which show the type of game I really like. My friend has recommended Deus Ex as well, so I may well give it a go.
