The acts commenced on this ball of earth: Upon my tongues continual slanders ride,
I got down to some honest to goodness gardening at the weekend. Now that the garden is relatively safe (no concrete steps with a lack of support either side) I can start turning if from a wilderness with junk in, to something that my daughter might want to play in.
Spend half the day moving all the junk into one patch ready to go to the tip (which I've learnt never to visit at the weekend unless you like queuing for 4 hours) and the rest trimming overgrown hedges and trees and doing some digging into the ground.
Things I've learnt:-
- Our soil is alkaline. This means I can only plant certain types of plant, but it is not as bad as acidic soil, which can melt your hands into a gooey mess.
- Acidic soil doesn't melt your hands.
- Our soil is very stony and it hurts if you hit a stone with your spade.
- Next door are knocking down their patio. I liked next door's patio. Oh well.
- Frogs like to live under abandoned carpet.
- You don't want to hedge trim a wire fence.
- Conifer trees, left unchecked grow very tall and you need a ladder to get near the top.
- My ladder isn't tall enough.
- Shredding is fun. I borrowed my dad's shredder. I keep it.
- Never leave a garden untouched for three years. It makes looking after it very difficult.
Next weekend, the borders. Uh oh.
