I visited the doctor again today and was given the all clear. He'd looked at the chest x-ray and nothing round. The blood tests were all in the normal ranges, so there isn't anything major wrong with me.

The doctor remains at a loss to describe what is wrong, but has given me some Ranitidine to see if it a digestive problem. I did point out that I hadn't had a digestive biscuits recently, but he did insist I try them out.
