It is interesting how two children from the same genetic stock can be so different. Even though he is only four weeks old, George is so unlike Emilia it is startling. I'm not talking about appearance (although there are similarities here, they look very different too). George is a much more demanding baby than Emilia was. He has put on a large amount of weight since birth, nearly double that of Emilia. Maybe this is a boy/girl thing, but I'm not sure. It is not that George is a big baby. Many girls are born much heavier than George was.

The only way George will sleep at the moment is with someone holding him, or feeding him. This has been quite a shock to us, as Emilia was quite happy to sleep in her Moses basket from the word go. At night, George spends about an hour in the basket, the rest of the time he is in bed with us. Mind you, Emilia did do that on occasion.

During the evening, George sleeps a lot, but it has to be in my arms. Put him down and its "waa waa" straight away. We are actually leaving him to cry a lot longer than we did with Emilia, so I don't think we are being soft on him.

He is also a much more sucky baby. Emilia was a snacker. A quick suck and she was asleep. Half an hour later, she would wake up for another quick suck. George feeds! Hours at a time. You can almost see his legs getting bigger. And he sucks hard (apparently). And if the goods are not ready for him in one second flat, he'll let you know loudly and angrily.

The dummy is out (or rather in). We don't feel we have failed in this respect. There is nothing actually wrong with the use of a dummy in my book. It is the over reliance of a dummy to get the child to sleep, or just to keep it quiet that causes the problem. Emilia didn't like a dummy, and she didn't need it. We put the dummy in range of George's mouth and he was away. It was scary the effort he put into it.

Emilia never took a bottle either (causing a host of problems) but I don't think we'll be long getting George onto one.
