The acts commenced on this ball of earth: Upon my tongues continual slanders ride,

  1. Attack of the Clones

  2. 19 May 2002

(fear not for this is not a review and does not contain spoilers; a review will appear in vent later)

I hadn't felt excited before. It didn't feel right to be excited. I wasn't a teenager. Then I saw the Jedi Knight at the top of the stairs. I was in the queue to see the new Star Wars film.

I hadn't actually planned to see Attack of the Clones so soon. I was going to wait a couple of weeks as I dislike the queuing and poor seat opportunities that you get with a big new release. However, a friend called to say that a group of people were planning on going on Sunday and had bought a ticket for his wife. His wife was working, would I like to go? Okay. Sure. No big deal, but I do want to see it.

My parents were due to visit, so I'd arranged for them to come early. They turned up at 10:30, whilst Gina and Emilia were at Mothercare trying to buy some new sandals for the cheeky one. George was having an active spell, i.e. he wasn't asleep and was staring at something that interested him. I've tried on occasion to follow his stare, but can never quite tell what it is that is interesting him.

Pretty soon after my parents arrived, George is asleep and Gina is back from the shops. The gave up on the sandals; they were ticket 97, when Gina left they had called 18 because there was a sale on. The things people do just to get 10% off. I'd rather pay a little bit extra to get a better quality product, or better service.

I left after lunch and met up with Jonathan outside the cinema. I met a group of his friends and as usual forgot everyone's name. Paul (funny how I could remember his name though), the organizer, came out of the cinema with the tickets. There was a massive queue already, this was nearly an hour before the start, and we all rushed inside. In our local cinema, all the screens are accessed from upstairs, and you enter at the back so that the screen itself is at ground level.

It was at the top of the stairs we met the Jedi Knight, looking down as if he was about to jump. He looked like he was lost. I didn't find out if he was a worker at the cinema, or he was waiting for the rest of his dressing up party to appear. When we went in, I realised it was the former as the lady who took our ticket stubs was Princess Leia.

Inside the theatre itself it was as I had feared. We had to sit four rows from the front and left with a stiff neck (I had to sit front row for Titanic and only saw half the movie). There were cheers for the trailers (false hope), cheers for the real start (a new hope?) and child-like cheers for Jar Jar (in defense of the criticism the character got?).

It was certainly a film that needs talking about. With that in mind, we had to go to the pub afterwards and have a pinted discussion about it. And a game of pool. And another pint. Then, remembering my responsibilities to my family, I regretfully went home. Sometimes, I really miss the single life.
