The acts commenced on this ball of earth: Upon my tongues continual slanders ride,

  1. A Sort of False Alarm

  2. 17 Apr 2002

I'd just taken a phone call from my wife, Gina. She sounded close to tears, but it was hard to be sure as the line was so bad. She was on the way home from the doctor's after a routine checkup, only to find out that the bus she was trying to catch didn't pass the stop she was waiting at. She decided to walk down to the main road. Emilia is with her, in the push chair.

As she walked down the hill, everything suddenly got painful. Each step caused intense backache. And worse, contractions start. Hence the phone call.

With a quick talk to my colleague in case anyone explains where I've gone, I'm off. Ten seconds later, I'm back, and three seconds after that, I'm off. With the car keys.

I feel justified in speeding down the dual carriage way immediately outside the offices. Noone can walk to it, and it is deserted. However, it only allows me to join the Reading town traffic five seconds earlier than I normally would have. At least, I've made up for the keys.

Fifteen minutes of slightly nervous traffic sitting, I reach my wife, who had stopped at a park bench. Relief all round. Although still in great pain from her back, the contractions stopped as soon as she stopped walking. Emilia had been fine all the way through. We got back to our house and Gina put her head down, back up on a beanbag. Emilia liked the look of this and copied her.

I hung around a bit; gave Emilia some lunch and made tea before heading back to work.

I wasn't too worried about it all, having gone through the birth process once before, and, hey I'm a man, I don't have to go through the birth process itself. I think I was more worried about Gina being stuck in the middle of town and being in pain, said as I'd be if she'd broken her leg or something.

We both just want it over with, to be honest.
